My grandson, Mason, is turning four this weekend. He and I have been talking for several months about making a “farm cake” and so the process began earlier this week with the cake topper.
A few months ago when I ran out to get pine shavings at Tractor Supply I noticed they were selling gingerbread houses for Christmas, that looked like chicken runs. I thought it was so adorable, and I am sure that’s where this idea originated for me. I was trying to figure out how to top the cake, and the kit for a Christmas house was still sitting on my dining room table, not put together, due to everyone in our house getting Covid the first week of December. That put a real damper on our normal pre Christmas activities, and the gingerbread house was one of the casualties.
So I thought, here is an assembled base and I could just go to Michaels to buy some royal icing to cover it and make it look like our barn. With a little green icing for the shutters and doors it would be perfect! So off we went to Michaels and Mason and I also found edible green grass topper for the fields (thank you Easter decor!) There were so many cute decorations to choose from. I also ordered some farm animals online with some corral fencing for the top. Today I am going to pick up a full sheet cake from Wegmans to put this all together. Mason also wants a pond, which we have here on the farm. Grandpa Chris came up with the idea of using blueberry jelly (brilliant!) for the pond. Then my daughter Katie suggested Rice Krispie treat hay bales, which I also thought was brilliant! It is so fun putting things like this together and seeing the pure joy on Mason’s face, frosting his own barn, and everyone coming up with really great design ideas for the barn.
I can’t wait to show you the finished product later this afternoon! I am hoping it is not like one of those “here it is on Pinterest” then “here it is when I did it” projects. Lol. Fingers crossed!
